Michael is our Lead Pastor and has been since he and his family moved to Marion in 2007. Though they moved to Southern Illinois from Arizona, Michael and Carol Ann both grew up in Martinsville, IL, located about one hour east of Effingham. The Naves married in 1993 on August 7th and have five children: Zachary, Parker, Layton, Trinae and Keyan.
Before sensing a call to ministry, Michael aspired to be a commercial airline pilot. Shortly after receiving his Private Pilot’s license, God revealed other plans for his future career. After struggling and discerning for several months, he announced his decision to pursue vocational ministry at Olive Branch, the small Southern Baptist Church where he was raised (and later licensed and ordained him.)
In response to this career decision, Michael finished his aerospace degree at Indiana State University and headed off to The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. During his time at seminary (1994-1998), Michael served as the pastor of Livonia Baptist Church and then the associate pastor of the Martinsville Bible Church.
After graduating in May of 1998 with a Master of Divinity, Michael became the Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Shelburn, Indiana. During his time in Shelburn, Michael learned how to pastor a growing church and lead a staff as well as discovering the challenges of building a new facility.
In 2006, Michael accepted an invitation to plant a church in Goodyear, Arizona. Though this process revealed he was not designed to be a church planter, Michael refined his ability to lead an established and growing congregation. From that experience, he brought a real passion for intentional leadership and disciple-making to Cornerstone. One year after coming to Cornerstone, Michael completed his Doctor of Ministry degree from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois.
What does our Lead Pastor do? Michael is responsible to lead our church in the mission of “helping people follow Jesus.” This happens most noticeably when he passionately delivers practical teaching from God’s Word at our weekend worship services. Less observable is his work leading and developing our staff, refining vision and goals, and prioritizing resources.
When Michael is not “working,” you will likely find him at home with his family. Though few would guess it, he is an introvert and loves to get away and work on projects big and small. Michael changes the oil in the family vehicles and did much of the “building” of their current home south of Marion. He also enjoys sports and still dreams of one day owning his own plane.
