Good Friday to You,
Mom and Dad gave me this Bible my freshman year in high school. I don’t specifically remember how I reacted when I ripped off the wrapping paper that Christmas morning, but I was less than thrilled. I needed brand name clothes to look “high school cool.” And if If not clothes, something fun. Isn’t that what Christmas gifts for teenagers are supposed to be?
For several years, my new Bible was mostly the token prop I grabbed as we headed out the door for church each Sunday morning. But, then it happened. I came to a place in my life when I desperately wanted to hear from God. I didn’t know where to start. I sure didn’t have a plan. But, I knew that if I wanted to hear from God, I needed to read His Word… and I was right!
God began speaking to me.
Think about how dramatically your life would change this year if you began regularly hearing from God. It is more than possible. Regularly hearing from God can be your expectation. It is what God wants for you! But know this… it will not become your new reality if you do not effectively read your Bible. The primary way God speaks to His children is through His Word.
At first, I was more excited than effective. Being raised in church, I was familiar with the “big” stories. I knew David killed Goliath and Daniel was saved from the lions’ den. But, my understanding didn’t go much deeper than surface-level familiarity with the well-known stories.
Because of my ignorance, I regularly closed my Bible in disappointment. I simply hadn’t heard from God. I still wanted to… but God’s Word felt more like reading lists of names, rules, and unrelated stories. A New Year’s Resolution to read our Bibles often creates a similarly disappointing experience. We start with much excitement and determination. We give up (in shame) when it becomes little more than names, rules, and ancient stories.
Thankfully, as the wear on my Bible shows… I kept going back… AND I got help.
My help came in the form of seminary. I kept going back to God’s Word – for me and for the Bible studies I started teaching. Many years have now passed. The initial excitement and determination eventually subsided, but my ability to accurately hear from God continues to grow. I got help and I kept practicing. Over time, I developed a helpful process for reading and studying God’s Word. And because I did, more than ever before, I regularly hear what God is saying through His Word!
This weekend, we are going to do something we’ve never done before. Instead of simply delivering the final product (sermon), we’re going to show you how we get there. We will walk through the process of how we discern God’s voice from scripture. In a sense, we are giving you a “peek behind the curtain”, positioning you to learn how you can regularly hear from God!
This weekend, we will study Deuteronomy 8:1-10… together!
Hope you join us this weekend,
